Today, many utility companies offer rebates for the installation of both electric and natural gas energy-efficiency measures. We can help you explore how your commercial building might benefit from these programs. Please call us at (207) 883-1473
One example is the EFFICIENCY MAINE Commercial Grant Program
The Efficiency Maine Commercial Grant Program allows industrial, commercial, municipal and non-profit organizations to apply for grants of up to $50,000. Projects are funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and are expected to meet goals that include energy savings, job creation and/or retention, and sustainable economic impact. Businesses that apply for grants are required to demonstrate the ability to provide at least 50% in matching funds. Grants are awarded based upon a competitive evaluation process.
In March, the Commercial Grant Program awarded $635,000 for energy efficiency projects at 19 commercial, municipal and non-profit facilities across Maine. A second round of applications came under review in early August, and Efficiency Maine recently awarded the remaining $1.4 million in funding to an additional 42 organizations. Winning proposals included boiler upgrades, solar thermal systems, and heat recovery projects.
Efficiency Maine worked with the Office of the Governor and the Legislature to set aside $2 million for commercial grants out of the approximately $40 million provided by ARRA for energy-related projects. Efficiency Maine also manages separate energy efficiency grants and incentive programs for the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
Efficiency Maine’s Business Program offers cash incentives to reduce the upfront cost of projects that help you use electricity more efficiently, from new fluorescent lighting to HVAC to farm equipment. Eligible organizations may now receive total incentives—combined Prescriptive and Custom—of up to $300,000 in a single calendar year period…on top of the reduced operating expenses that energy-efficient equipment offers every year.
Efficiency Maine has calculated fixed or “Prescriptive Incentives” for certain types of equipment that generate consistent savings over a wide range of applications, including:
- HVAC equipment
- NEMA Premium® energy-efficient motors
- Variable-speed motor drives
- Commercial refrigeration
- Agricultural equipment
“Custom Incentives” are offered to encourage creative solutions by supporting energy-efficient electrical equipment for which costs and savings vary by application. These calculations are supplied by AAA Energy Service Co. and then reviewed by the Efficiency Maine engineering staff. The amount of Custom Incentives depends on the type of project:
For retrofit projects, the amount of the Efficiency Maine Custom Incentive may be up to 35% of the total cost of the efficiency project, including labor.
For new construction and major renovations, as well as replacement of failed equipment, the incentive may be up to 75% of the incremental cost of high-efficiency equipment over standard equipment.
